Basil Brush - Lucky chimney sweep
Basil’s grandfather was a chimney sweep in the east end of London during the 1960s and finally retiring in the 1990s. Granddad Harry often took Basil out with him in the school holidays sweeping chimneys
Basil’s main job was to let granddad know when the brushes had appeared out of the top of the chimney.
The superstition started when King George II horse and carriage bolted in a London street and was stopped by a chimney sweep. King George shook the hand of the chimney sweep and wished him good luck. So on seeing a chimney sweep people think of them as good luck.
It is considered good luck to see a chimney sweep on the way to the ceremony and after the wedding for the sweep to kiss the bride on the cheek and shake hands with the groom and attending guests, Basil will then present the bride with a small gift and then wait for photographs if required. Basil will quietly merge into the background to allow you to carry on with your family photographs.
(Basil’s real name is Kim but her granddad nicknamed her Basil)
